Compliance

United Kingdom

The Equality Act 2010 requires businesses that serve the public to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, online as well. InclusiveWeb helps UK organisations find and fix WCAG 2.2 AA barriers.

Laws & Standards — United Kingdom

Equality Act 2010

Service providers must not discriminate and must make reasonable adjustments (ss. 20 and 29). Claims go to the county court, or the sheriff court in Scotland, within six months; remedies can include compensation for injury to feelings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Equality Act apply to websites?
Yes. A website through which you provide a service to the public is part of that service. EHRC guidance says the duty applies whatever the size of the site, and that providers should plan ahead rather than wait for a complaint.
Which standard should a UK website meet?
The Act does not name one. WCAG 2.2 Level AA is the benchmark the UK government uses for public sector sites under the 2018 Accessibility Regulations, and it is the safest target for private businesses too.
Does the European Accessibility Act affect UK companies?
If you provide covered services, such as e-commerce or consumer banking, to consumers in the EU, yes. Since 28 June 2025 the EAA applies to services provided to EU consumers, and its scope is not limited by where the company is based. Micro-enterprises providing services are exempt.
What can happen if my site is inaccessible?
A customer can bring a claim in the county court within six months. Courts can award damages, including for injury to feelings. The Vento bands used by employment tribunals, which start at £1,300 from April 2026, are sometimes used as a guide.
Does InclusiveWeb support English?
Yes. The accessibility panel, audit, and all reports are available in English. Support is also provided in English.
